The Aughts: A Retrospectoscope Dec. 31st, 2009 @ 03:37 pm
So now that it's the dawn of the next decade, I started looking back through things that have occured in the last ten years. There's been some awesome stuff and kind of a lot of bullcrap. We'll see which parts seem important in another ten years, but this is the stuff that I found interesting. ^^

Movies! Dec. 25th, 2009 @ 10:34 pm
As is our tradition, my family went out today for a Christmas movie. We're all pretty big Sherlock Holmes fans, so the new Holmes movie was a no-brainer. I had some reservations about the film -- Holmes was no pacifist, but Action Hero Holmes makes me nervous, as does the whole "Black Magician Wants to Rule the World" plot -- but the end result was surprisingly tolerable.

Five Commercials I am Officially Sick Of

1. Billy Mays: The only thing worse than a shrill, shouting pitchman hocking a useless piece of undercooked fraud? A shrill, shouting zombie pitchman! It kills me a little bit inside to know that someone, somewhere said, "You know what'd be a good idea? A Billy Mays marathon." Coming across these commercials in the course of an evening is the TV watching equivalent of runing face-first into an iron bar.

2. Mac vs. PC: Really I'm sick of both sides of this competition. My operating system isn't a lifestyle choice, and I am not personified by my choice of computer. Also, John Hodgeman has something like ten times the charisma of Mac guy, so I really don't know what's going on there.

3. Enzyte: "This is Bob! His huge cheesy grin is meant to comically suggest that he's happy with his huge penis! Despite the fact that he and his wife are two of the most hideously distorted trolls ever to bruise the face of this planet, we hope that you'll think of Enzyte when you want to enlarge your pathetically tiny member! So, guys, the next time you break down weeping in the shower at the shriveled raisin that God has, in his mockery, placed between your legs, remember Bob's twisted rictus grin, and call for Enzyte!"

4. Nostradamus Effect on the History Channel: Is the end of the world nigh!? Was (insert historical figure, probably Hitler, here) a prophet!? This Tuesday, watch as we give tinfoil hat-wearing conspiracy theorists and pseudoscientific dribble the benefit of the doubt.

5. Any video game commercial that cites a review in an "official" magazine: Even if the source didn't seriously impugn the validity of the quotes shown on gaming commercials, the fact that they're taken so far out of context that they may well have been launched out of the magazine on a booster rocket may be a bit of a red flag.

At least I haven't seen anyone cite a Maxim review in a while. Sheesh. >_>

Changed up my icons for the first time pretty much ever. The new ones are from the upcoming FFXII comic. I figured they work well with this journal's color scheme anyway, why not use 'em. ^^b
» Mark Twain Likes to Talk
I came across a quote from Mark Twain today that confused me a little;

"I was a mugwump. We, the mugwumps, a little company made up of the unenslaved of both parties, the very best men to be found in the two great parties—that was our idea of it—voted sixty thousand strong for Mr. Cleveland in New York and elected him. Our principles were high, and very definite. We were not a party; we had no candidates; we had no axes to grind. Our vote laid upon the man we cast it for no obligation of any kind. By our rule we could not ask for office; we could not accept office. When voting, it was our duty to vote for the best man, regardless of his party name. We had no other creed. Vote for the best man—that was creed enough. - Mark Twain’s Autobiography (North American Review, Dec. 21, 1906)"

What I'm really curious about is how they determined who the best man was. Most fit for the job, physically and mentally? Largest breadth of experience? Most able to meet the specific challenges of the day? So many of these definitions of "best" are just a spiral back into personal opinion. It's a very noble goal, trying to vote for the man who'll do the best job, but it seems like an ideal that someone would trot out without realizing how complicated what they were really asking for really was.

So apparently there's a fighting game based on Les Miserables. No, I'm not shitting you. Between this, John McCain admitting that he doesn't know how to manage a beaver, and Louis Pasteur shooting down a helicopter (around 2:20), I really don't know what to make of the world anymore.
» Next, on Am I Creepy or Not
So scientists are trying to make robots more responsive to human emotion, hopefully picking up a decrease to overall creepiness somewhere along the way. They've made a replica of Albert Einstein to test the principles out, and... Well, here, take a look.

On the one hand, the head is fairly realistic. It certainly beats the hell out of a lot of humanish robots out there in the uncanny valley. But on the other hand... Well, it's a fairly realistic head on an obviously robotic body. It's like they resurrected Albert Einstein and gave him a tiny little mecha body. And I can't decide if that's awesome or not. I mean, on the one hand, he can't give you a handshake without a nine-week course on how to operate his own wrist. But on the other hand, he finally has the power to crush Neils Bohr.

Unless someone gave Neils Bohr a mech.

Five Movies Watched Backwards
1. Pirates of the Carribean; Dead Man's Chest: A pirate is thrown up by a giant Kraken, and goes on to join a group of bloodthirsty cannibals by driving his ship up their beach and leading them in a backwards marathon.
2. Jaws: A shark continually throws up swimmers until they have to open a beach.
3. Monty Python's The Meaning of Life: Actually, this doesn't make any sense backwards or forwards.
4. Akira: A huge mutated psionic giant shrinks down into the body of a teenager, loses his psychic power, and goes to high school. Also included; A motorcycle gang engages in a spirited game of "I'm not touching you."
5. Star Trek; the Motion Picture: Boldly backing away from where men have never gone before.

Mom made me what is possibly the mother of all birthday cakes. I will attempt to describe its contents to you;

Take two freshly baked chocolate cake rounds, and melt two full Hershey's bars over one. After the cakes cool, frost as normal with a thick layer of chocolate buttercream frosting. Top liberally with chocolate bits. Serve, and observe as members of your family begin to visibly vibrate.

Please select which of the following is more disturbing:

1. John Diefenbaker, Canadian Prime Minister and Nixon impersonator, had a series of Vault-like nuclear fallout shelters built around Canada.

2. They are called Diefenbunkers.

3. The Wikipedia article actually refers to them as such.

Thank you, and good night.
